Double Journal here because enter on the scene: GÁSKI
Wednesday evening Elisa matched me with Gáski as a guide horse since Herkules left for the multi-day, and even though I was a bit nervous at first seeing as the multi-day tour had opted to leave him behind because he could be "problematic," it ended up being love at first ride. Cheesy as fuck I know, and maybe its too early to be able to say something like that, but something about him just feels like such a soul horse moment. We went on the 45 minute loop with Elisa & Stormur after doing some rounds in the paddocks, and by the end I knew I'd be spending my summer with him if all goes my way.
Fast forward to yesterday, the 26th, I took Gáski for two tours--a one hour and a larger group, where not only was he an angel both times, but just enough of a challenge (mounting after the gates...haha....ha....) to make me think a little extra. He walks a bit different than the other horses though--literally. I'm not sure if its because his shoulders are narrower, or he's just really nervous, but he really extends well and feels almost thoroughbred-ish. Also lets be real, he looks cool as shiiiiiiit. THE iconic Icelandic. We messed around putting Papaya on a couple horses to see if she wanted to go on the ride with us without much luck. Maybe next time.
Then today I got to sit out the morning tour and do stable work, but we had a larger group mid-afternoon and then a 2 hour tour I went on. The group tour was nice because I felt super cool on Gaski--being both the tallest and on the prettiest horse (but I suppose that's objective). At the very end of the 2 hour tour though I noticed Gáski was walking sort of funny and then he THREW A SHOE. Right when everything starting going right finding a guide horse too :(.
Right now we're all about to sit down to eat leftovers the Owner's wife gave us from dinners she prepared for the multi-day tour group of women--first it was baked salmon (YUM) and now its a meat/pasta dish (DOUBLE YUM). Elisa says she really only gives us food on special occasions, but I super hope its a more regular thing than not because her cooking is insane. Almost makes me envy Elisa here all winter getting the goods. The owners wife has such a calm but also secure presence and the fact that she's thinking of us with leftovers makes my little heart pitter patter. She is a woman of few words, but a total icon in my eyes.
Since we had a group today we had to send some horses back to their respective rest pastures--a job I haven't quite worked up the nerve to do just yet since my race day, but thoroughly enjoy filming and cheering my coworkers on.
